Kia OBD1 Trouble Codes

The following trouble codes are specific to Kia. You may also see Hyundai trouble codes, since Kia and Hyundai are of the same parent company.

Kia Trouble Codes Access

Without OBD Scan Tool

When trouble occurs in the main input or output devices, check for the cause using the data link connector (DLC) and the malfunction indicator lamp located in the instrument cluster. Failures of each input and output device are indicated and retrieved from the engine control module (ECM) as diagnostic trouble codes. To access the trouble codes, proceed as follows:

  • Locate the DLC at top center of firewall and use jumper wire to connect ENG. Test and ground terminals.
  • On 1995 Sportage models, turn ignition to on, but do not start engine.
  • On other models, start and warm engine, then run at 2,000 RPM for 3 minutes.
  • Diagnostic trouble codes will be displayed as a series of long and short flashes on the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).

The ECM indicates stored trouble code by flashing the malfunction indicator/check engine light. Trouble codes 1 through 9 are indicated by individual short blinks and trouble codes 10 and above are indicated by long and short blinks. The trouble codes can be determined by adding long and short blinks.

Kia Trouble Codes Clearance

All trouble codes must be cleared from the ECU’s memory after repairing the faults. Otherwise, code(s) would remain in the ECU’s memory indefinitely and would appear along with a new code in the event of a future problem. To clear the trouble codes, proceed as follows:

  • Turn the ignition key to position off.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal for at least 20 seconds and the ECU (ECM) memory will be erased.
  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal and check the codes to confirm the repair.

Warning: Disconnecting the battery may erase memory from electronic units, e.g., clock, radio.
